Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) is a German luxury automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916 based in Munich. BMW also owns Mini and Rolls Royce cars as well as producing a range of Motorbikes.
One of the few main stream manufacture to have invested in EV technology and now markets electric cars under the BMWi brand.
In 2014 the BMW group sold over 1.8Million vehicles worldwide. The BMW i is a sub-brand of BMW founded in 2011 to design and manufacture plug-in electric vehicles.
The sub-brand initial plans called for the release of two vehicles the i3 and the i8. The first i3 units shipped in November 2013 with the first retail deliveries in Germany. The BMW i8 sports plug-in hybrid car was launched in Germany in June 2014. As of June 2015, over 30,000 i brand vehicles have been sold, consisting of over 26,000 i3s and about 4,500 i8s. The all-electric BMW i3 ranked among the world’s top ten best selling plug-in electric vehicles as of May 2015.
Plug In Hybrids or PHEV
BMW is expected to offer PHEV versions of the 2 series Active Tourer, the 3 Series Saloon and the X5 SUV.
